Facebook enables free iPhone voice calls

sur facebook
The tech press started buzzing earlier this month with reports that Facebook planned to add VoIP (voice over IP) calling to its Messenger app for the iPhone. The new feature officially arrived Tuesday, when Facebook released an update for its app.
What does it mean for you? Free calls. Sort of.-->
Facebook's app transmits calls using your phone's broadband connection, whatever it is -- 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi. Instead of sucking up your monthly allotted voice minutes from your cellular carrier, it sucks up megabytes from your data plan. That's a boon for heavy talkers with unlimited data plans.
This is nothing new or technologically groundbreaking: Skype was doing it long before Facebook. Facebook has many more active users than Skype, though, and the allure of having to use one less network or app will appeal to some (perhaps many).
But it's not all roses just yet. For now, this is a pretty limited offering.
Your phone won't alert you the way it does when you have a normal call: Facebook calls just show up as a push notification. And right now, you can only connect with a conversation partner who also has Messenger installed on their iPhone.
There's no way to ring up a Facebook friend who is logged in through the website, and there isn't any way to place a call to a ten-digit phone number. Calling is still absent from the Android and BlackBerry versions of the Messenger app.
There's a good reason for those omissions. The VoIP features in the Web version of Facebook were built using Skype's technologies, while the calling technology in Messenger is all Facebook. The ability to place and receive calls using traditional phone numbers requires telecommunications resources Facebook doesn't have (at the moment, at least).
For the time being, services such as Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) Voice and Skype have a leg up, given their larger feature sets. But Facebook generally doesn't let anything remain in stasis for long. As we've seen in the past -- and caught a glimpse of yesterday with theGraph Search reveal -- Facebook likes to start small, and steadily flesh out its products. Expect the same with voice calling.
And unlike Google Voice and Skype (which is owned by Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500)), Facebook is 100% platform neutral. Facebook (FB) doesn't care if you use its app on an iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry or something crazy like Ubuntu.
In a time when every company is saving the best features of its products for its own mobile ecosystem, Facebook has the opportunity to both usurp its direct competition and build out a telecom-slaying voice service.
It will be interesting to watch where this leads.

Your thoughts: The next Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs
In advance of Friday, the first anniversary of the death of Apple's co-founder, we published a story pondering a question many in the tech world have been asking for a while: Who will be the next Steve Jobs?
We put forward seven names, along with pros and cons for each: Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Apple Senior Vice President Jonathan Ive, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, Paypal and Tesla Motors co-founder and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, and SCVNGR and LevelUP CEO Seth Priebatsch.

What followed was a lively, mostly thoughtful discussion by you, our readers. Hundreds of people took to the comments section to reflect on Jobs' legacy (the good, the bad and the ugly of it) and consider the question at hand.
You gave your opinions on the folks we mentioned, suggested names that we didn't include and pondered whether anyone can ever be another Jobs -- or whether anyone should be.
Here are some of our favorite comments from the discussion (with minor tweaks for spelling and grammar).
On how our candidates in the story stack up:
groo22
Elon Musk is fantastic. He's either going to be one of the best CEOs ever, or he's going to burn out with the most inventive vision probably anyone ever had. I hope he has success. You can't compare him to Steve Jobs though, their goals are not the same. Elon is way better and may very well cement his name as the best CEO of this generation and possibly this century.
Piscesgal609
I'm not much of a techie, but I'd have to say Zuckerberg because Facebook, like Apple, has changed the world and the way we do things. Plus they're both geeks and started at a very young age, both are arrogant, etc.
bhartman36
Of the people pictured, I'd say the "next Jobs" title has to go to Bezos. In fact, I think Amazon's innovations began to eclipse those of Apple even before Jobs' death. There's more growth and innovation going on between one generation of Kindle (be they e-ink or Fire) to the next than there is between one generation of iPhone/iPod/iPad to the next.
Brian Jones
Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and Marissa Mayer -- we need products we can touch and experience, not folks running server farms. My vote goes to Elon Musk. Just like Jobs, when others pooh-poohed his ideas, he made it happen.

I would say Musk. The guy truly innovated how we do e-commerce, and SpaceX is another bold idea. To say that he hasn't changed how we live is shortsighted, considering the effect Paypal has on commerce and what it has pioneered online. It may not be as direct to touch, but most any time I buy something online, he is involved. Big ideas and big vision, stuff that seems so radical, that is where innovation will come from.
On whom we left out:

njsokalski
Don't forget about the other big Steve: Steve Ballmer of Microsoft. Microsoft has started joining the hardware side of the industry along with the software side, and they are also growing in the mobile and consumer parts as well. Yes, they are still a little bigger with commercial & business customers, but consumers are becoming a bigger part of that. Also, don't forget developers. I do software, app and web development at home, and that has not only helped keep me as a Microsoft customer, but helped me discover and love even more Microsoft products.
ayacsa
Without a doubt it's Mark Shuttleworth, the man behind the Ubuntu Linux Distribution and Canonical, the company that supports Ubuntu.
Swoops07
I think the question should be, who will be the next Bill Gates? Gates has done more to shape the world than Jobs could have ever done. He has also given back so much more than the greedy Steve Jobs. Gates has literally saved lives with his generosity.
Michael Wellman
Technologically speaking, Gates certainly has done more to advance the current state of technology than any one single person (that I can think of) currently living. ... He may not have been as trendy as Jobs or had the eye for trendsetting like Jobs did (though, even that is arguable, as most of the work was done by Apple's fleet of designers), but he certainly has a better heart and mind.
Others mentioned: Twitter and Square co-founder Jack Dorsey, Google creators Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs and, for reasons we can't quite comprehend, Vladimir Putin.
There won't (or shouldn't) be another Steve Jobs:
BadaJohn
There is no one as complex, demanding, quirky or brilliant -- all wrapped up in one package -- as Jobs. Truly unique. Won't be another like him.
KeyserSozeRu
We really don't need another Steve Jobs. R.I.P. We need another Einstein, another Churchill, a lot more da Vincis, another Lincoln, more (Martin) Luther Kings, Gandhis, Beethovens, Chaplins ... and Chuck Norris! Seriously, Steve Jobs is way overrated. Even as a manager he sucked.

madelefant
No one. I have sort of a theory of an era that begins with Andy Warhol's soup cans and ends with Jobs' death. To me, Andy Warhol's soup can art conveyed the idea of the iconic image of a physical product living on its own, becoming disembodied. Jobs and Apple became the real-world realization of that. We are at the point where there really isn't anything new to invent in this area.
bluewaters4567
Was there the next Edison? Was there the next Einstein? Was there the next (scientist Michael) Faraday? Why should there be a next Jobs? The beauty of creation is that it never produces duplicates. That is what we do.
Rendar888
There are brilliant scientists among us right now creating remarkable things: advanced cybernetics, nanotech, AI, better medicines. If you mean a person who will make new-looking computers and phones, it will be someone we haven't seen yet or haven't been paying attention to. Definitely won't be Zuckerberg, Bezos or Mayer. There will always be a new torchbearer. ... They could show up tomorrow.

Facebook's new 'Graph Search' could be social game changer !

Facebook today took the wraps off a new search tool that could be a game changer for social networking, according to one analyst.

Basically, Facebook is unleashing the collective knowledge and opinions of its one billion users around the world.

"Facebook Graph Search has the potential to really change the game over time," said Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group. "The power of Graph Search comes from Facebook's sheer size. The more data there is to search and map, the more valuable the results. It can make Facebook a much more valuable tool."

Earlier today, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to the stage at the company's Menlo Park, Calif. offices for a press event that had been preceded by nearly a week of increasing speculation about the company's plans. While most rumors had the company prepping a smartphone or new mobile strategy, Zuckerberg said its focus is on search.

So far, there have been two major pillars of Facebook, the Newsfeed and Timeline, Zuckerberg told about 150 reporters at the event. Now Facebook is adding a third pillar: Graph Search.

The feature, which will appear as a bigger search bar at the top of each page, is designed offer up an answer after combing through Facebook's own massive store of user information.

Want to find a great seafood restaurant in San Francisco, for example? Graph Search will find out what restaurants your friends, and even their friends, have tried and liked.

If two people ask the same question, they're very likely to get different results because the results will be based on their individual set of friends and contacts.

Facebook has a massive collection of information about what restaurants, sneakers, appliances and bicycles its users have tried. It also has a similar amount of data on who has attended a certain college and now works at a certain company in a particular city.

Looking for a locally owned bookstore in Seattle? Looking for an old classmate in Maine? What's the best peanut butter or hybrid car?

Facebook is hoping you'll search for the answer on its site.

"This is a very good move for Facebook and it will earn them points with both common users and commercial users alike," said Olds. "There are more than a billion users on Facebook now, each one with some sort of data attached to them, whether it's stuff they've uploaded or their connections or whatever. This is a huge amount of interesting and useful data on its own, but the interrelationships between all of these users and things is even more valuable."

Jeff Kagan, an independent analyst, noted that while some people might be disappointed about Facebook's announcement today, it could be more important than they realize. "Users have been wanting a good search capability for a long time," said Kagan. "Will this be the answer? So far Facebook search has been awful.... If done right this could lead to another wave of Facebook growth."

Last fall, Zuckerberg said in an on-stage interview that he was interested in pursuing search and that Facebook, at that point, already handled about a billion queries a day.

Even so, Gartner analyst Brian Blau said that didn't fully prepare the company to take on a search job as big as the one just launched.

"...This is new tech," he said. "They had to solve lots of tech problems, including natural language search and all the issues behind making the search real-time, while respecting the privacy and audience settings on each piece of content."

Patrick Moorhead, an analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy, said this isn't a project that Facebook pulled off in the last few months.

"Great search is a very difficult, multi-year effort," said Moorhead. "Facebook had to leverage what they had with the current site, then add additional search filters and algorithms to take it to the next level. Instead of providing links to searches, it provides the data."

http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like

<iframe src="http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=<?php echo urlencode(get_permalink($post->ID)); ?>&layout=standard&show_faces=false&width=450&action=like&colorscheme=light" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" style="border:none; overflow:hidden; width:450px; height:25px"></iframe>
